New York State Police troopers executed a search warrant at a residence in Wawayanda that led to the recovery of a cache of illegal weapons and ammunition that allegedly belong to 39-year-old Middletown resident Norwell Therien.

Police said the search resulted in the recovery of:

  • Two AK-47 rifles with 100-round drum magazines and illegal bump stock;
  • Eleven illegal rifles;
  • 32 high-capacity magazines that fit assault rifles and pistols;
  • One pound of marijuana;

Therien was arrested and charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, five counts of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, criminal possession of a controlled substance, criminal possession of stolen property and criminal possession of marijuana, all felonies.

Additionally, Therien was charged with 11 counts of criminal possession of a weapon, 32 counts of possession of a high-capacity ammunition feeding device, endangering the welfare of a child and criminal possession of a controlled substance, all misdemeanors.

Following arraignment, Therien was remanded to Orange County Jail in lieu of $150,000 cash bail or $300,000 bond. He is due back in court later this year to answer the charges.
